Kade leaves the house shortly after Lex and Calla to pick up our blood supply for the next few weeks. With Calla around, weâre all a bit more on edge when it comes to our cravings, making it especially important to keep our fridge stocked.
With more human food too, I remind myself, making a mental note to place a grocery order in the next couple of days once I have a chance to speak to Calla. I know some of what she enjoys from our surveillance of her prior to the other night, but Iâd rather her tell me what sheâd like in the house. I figure that has a higher chance of going over better than if I fill the fridge with things I know she likes because we invaded every part of her life before we swept her away from it.
Heading upstairs to shower and unwind from the day, I pass Atlasâs office and pause outside the open door. The space is dark, save for the soft glow of a floor lamp accompanying the seating area off to the side of the room. He sits behind the desk, illuminated by his computer screen. His face is all hard lines and focus, but beyond that, I recognize the tiredness in his eyes and the darkness under them. Heâs changed out of his more business formal attire, having swapped it for a dark gray hoodie at some point, and his hair looks as if heâs run his fingers through it several times.
I tap my knuckles against the doorframe, though he no doubt already knows Iâm here, and step into the office as he glances up from his screen.
âWhat is it?â he asks in a deep voice. Itâs not unkind, though some might feel that way. Iâve long since gotten used to Atlasâs straightforward, oftentimes abrasive personality. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I shrug, approaching his desk and taking a seat in one of the chairs in front of it. âYou disappeared right after dinner. I just wanted to check in and make sure everything is okay with you.â
Atlas nods. âI had a few things to tie up before the end of the day.â He closes his laptop and leans back in his chair, meeting my gaze. âItâs quiet around here.â
âThe kids went out,â I offer wryly.
His lips twitch briefly before his expression turns serious. âDo you think we made a mistake?â
I donât have to seek clarification to confirm whatâor who, I should sayâheâs referring to, though I do ask, âWhy?â
Atlas exhales a sigh, rubbing his jaw before folding his arms over his chest. âI think sheâs going to be more trouble than sheâs worth.â
âAre you concerned her parents are going to get the authorities involved?â
He laughs, though itâs devoid of any humor. âNo. They arenât stupid and theyâve known this was going to happen. A deal is a deal.â
I nod. âDo you think we should have let her out of the arrangement?â
His brows knit. âThat was never a possibility. The second our enemies catch wind of any hint of weakness is a very dangerous moment.
